Blackjack Rules

The most common misconception of blackjack players when playing blackjack is to win the game; they need to be close or equal 21. But this is very wrong. The object of the game of blackjack is to beat the dealer. Blackjack players who risk a fairly good hand by trying to be close to 21 are usually "busted" and lose automatically.

There are a lot of instances in blackjack games that a 14-17 value hand can win just fine. Patience and contentment are key virtues that blackjack players must possess to improve their blackjack games.

It is important to know how many decks are to be played in blackjack. Take note that blackjack can be played with 1, 2, 4 and 8 deck games. The single deck blackjack is already becoming obsolete. The most common blackjack game nowadays is the ones with cards being dealt from a shoe, which means that the blackjack dealer uses the 4 and 8 decks. But in blackjack, the more decks used in the game play, the lesser the blackjack player's chances to win consistently. But blackjack players may still win at shoe blackjack although it is recommended to play using the single or double deck games.

If the blackjack player plays online, it is a must to ask first how many decks are being used in the game.

The blackjack dealer starts the game by distributing the two cards each to the players in a clockwise movement starting with the blackjack player on his left. The cards are dealt in blackjack one at a time. When the dealer shows his first card in blackjack, this is called an up-card. Once distribution of cards is done, the player at the dealer's left is the first to act. Blackjack dealers are always the last to act in a blackjack game, giving more leverage to the casino.

To "hit" in blackjack means to ask for another card from the deck. This is usually done in blackjack when the hand of the player is weak. To "stand" is to pass getting another card. A "double down" in blackjack is doubling the original bet placed and get another card from the deck. But remember that in blackjack, you can only double down when the blackjack player did not "hit."

If the blackjack player's two cards are a pair, it can be "split" to make two hands. This also means doubling the wager. An additional two cards are dealt to the blackjack player who "split."

All other cards in blackjack are counted at face value. All face cards in blackjack have a value of ten. However, an ace can either have a value of one or eleven at the discretion of the player. Blackjack is always fun when played in moderation. Blackjack can be very profitable if self-discipline is observed by the blackjack players at all times.
